Organic semiconductors are used as active medium for 2D distributed feedback (DFB) lasers. These lasers are based on flexible microstructured plastic substrates which are fabricated by holographic exposure and subsequent microreplication and which offer a large area low cost route to 2D photonic crystal structures. The emission spectra, coupling mechanisms and photonic band structure of 2D DFB lasers based on hexagonal and square gratings are investigated and compared with numerical calculations. Concepts for the incorporation of defects and high index materials are presented.
