We will present experiments and finite integration simulations on planar photonic crystal resonators in polymers and silica-like materials. Design issues such as efficient coupling of light to photonic crystal structures, optimal etching depths and air hole fractions for maximum transmission/suppression, achievable Q values of defect states in photonic stop gaps will be discussed. Preliminary studies on tunable photonic crystal structures for WDM and filter applications will be shown with an emphasis on electro-optical materials.
