We have implemented a scattering matrix approach for calculation of reflection and transmission properties of finite-sized Photonic Crystal samples [1]. As compared to standard transfer matrix calculations, this approach does not suffer from numerical instabilities that originate in the evanescent behavior of higher-order Fourier modes along the direction of the sample surface. As a consequence, this approach may be utilized to interpret reflection and transmission measurements on Photonic Crystals and allows a characterization of the quality of Photonic Crystals samples.
