Stability of Gap Solitons in Bose-Einstein Condensates — •Karl-Peter Marzlin1, Karen Marie Hilligsoe2, and Markus Oberthaler1 — 1Universität Konstanz — 2University of Aarhus, Denmark
Solitons are fundamental stationary solutions of nonlinear wave equations. Gap solitons are a particular form of solitons which can be created in condensates of attractively interacting atoms in a periodic potential. The question if a gap soliton is stable against small perturbations is highly relevant for ongoing experiments. In our studies we have found that a gap soliton is stable in a truly one-dimensional situation. In higher dimensions it is unstable even if the system is quasi one-dimensional. However, the time scale for instability is large enough to allow for experimental studies.
