Stimulated exchange of photons between atoms in a Bose-Einstein condensate leads to light-induced nonlinear terms in the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and these terms are comparable with collisional nonlinearities. However, the observation of light-induced nonlinearities in a Bose-Einstein condensate is difficult due to the decoherence caused by spontaneous emission, which implies rather strong restrictions on the interaction times. We propose an interference scheme to measure light-induced nonlinearities which is based on a combination of the phase imprinting method and the technique similar to the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage.
