Interferometric measurement of laser cooling efficiency with a single ion — •Alex Wilson, Pavel Bouchev, Jürgen Eschner, and Rainer Blatt — Institut für Experimentalphysik, Universität Innsbruck
By retro-reflecting the resonance fluorescence of a single trapped laser-driven Ba+ ion, we observe high-contrast self-interference in the scattered light and a modified decay of the excited level, which is correlated with the interference fringes [1]. The visibility of the two modulation signals reveals the internal and motional dynamics of the ion. From the experimental data we derive the localisation of the ion’s wave packet, i.e. the laser cooling efficiency in the 8-level system, as a function of the laser detunings.
