Single nanoparticles coupled to high-Q whispering-gallery modes in silica microspheres are promising candidates for controlled cavity-QED experiments or the realization of a single quantum emitter laser. In our experiment we realized the coupling of a single 200 nm dye-doped bead to a high-Q microsphere as well as the detection of the fluorescence via a well defined and controllable output port.
We coated the microspheres with dye-doped beads or CdS/ZnS nanocrystals [1]. By using a homemade laser scanning microscope we were able to select and to address a single nanoparticle on the microsphere surface. The emission spectra observed via the prism outcoupler revealed a very pronounced modulation, agreeing well with the calculated free spectral range of the microsphere.
