The description and characterization of non-linear optical processes, pursued by the so-called ’pattern’ and ’ultrafast’ communities, has been historically concentrated either to the pure spatial or to the pure temporal domain. A relevant exception has been the hunt for spatio-temporal stationary and localized wave packets, which has followed two different approaches in the linear and non-linear regimes: in the first, by balancing the intrinsic (normal) dispersion with the angular one of the wave packet; in the second, by balancing the intrinsic (anomalous) dispersion with the non-linear one. After an overview of the subject, we will present recent experimental and theoretical results that outclass the two approaches of above, demonstrating how the balance between all the three terms occurs spontaneously, in mismatched second-harmonic generation. The generated waves extend the soliton concept to a new realm, where the main hump coexist with conical tails, which reflect the symmetry of the linear dispersion relationship.
