The effective refractive indices of liquid crystals can be addressed by changing the temperature and applying electric or magnetic fields. This property can be utilized in order to shift the stop band in periodic structures which contain a liquid crystal. We report on our investigations about colloidal crystals and macroporous silicon structures which are filled with a liquid crystal. In both systems, we observe reasonable shifts of the band edge when the temperature is changed. In addition, we are about to explore the director field and the photonic band structure in macroporous hexagonal silicon structures by NMR and FTIR investigations, respectively. The challenges and limitations of electrical addressing are discussed in our contribution.
