Semiconductor Optics in Photonic Crystals — •T. Meier, R. Eichmann, B. Pasenow, T. Stroucken, P. Thomas, and S. W. Koch — Department of Physics and Material Sciences Center, Philipps University, Renthof 5, D-35032 Marburg, Germany, torsten.meier@physik.uni-marburg.de

In photonic crystals modifications of the transverse part of the electromagnetic field result in photonic bandstructures. Concerning semiconductor quantum wells in photonic crystals it has been shown that the strongly reduced spontaneous emission modifies the exciton statistics and Coulomb correlations inside the material [1,2].
Here, we concentrate on the corresponding modifications of the longitudinal part of the electromagnetic field, i.e. the Coulomb interactions. The structured dielectric environment leads to changes of the single-particle energies through self-energies and, in particular, alters the interaction between electrons and holes [2-4]. Therefore the periodic dielectric structuring introduces locally varying optical spectra and modifies the exciton binding energy. This offers the possibility to design important aspects of the optoelectronic semiconductor properties.
