Dynamical control of winter spring ozone — •Sandip Dhomse, Mark Weber, and J. P. Burrows — Institute of enviornmental physik, university of bremen, bremen
The large inter-annual variability of ozone at mid- high latitudes in stratosphere, is dynamically contro lled by the strength of Brewer-Dobson circulation. The strength of Brewer-Dobson circula tion mainly driven by the planetary wave activity. The strong winter/spring changes in the dynamic wave activity in mid-latitudes from year to year leads to large changes in momentum transfer into the various stratospheric levels. The dynamic activity is also linked to polar stratospheric temperatures (e. g. low dynamic activity result in cold polar stratospheric temperatures). The relationship between heat flux (proxy parameter for EP flux), Brewer-Dobson circulation ( changes in tropical and high latitude ozone), and polar vortex strength is investigated using seven years of GOME total ozone and OClO data and meteorological analyses from UKMO and ECMWF. The high wave activity in austral spring 2002 forced early breaking of the Antarctic polar vortex and allowed us the first time detailed examination of the inter-annual variability of GOME total ozone and OCIO and its relationship with EP flux in southern hemisphere. It is shown that the winter heat flux in the stratosphere correlates very strongly with spring-to-fall ratio of total ozone pole-wards of 50∘.
