The Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) is one of the remote sensing instruments aboard ESA’s new Environmental Satellite (ENVISAT). It measures column amounts and vertical profiles of various trace gases in the Earth’s atmosphere based on absorption spectra of backscattered solar radiation. A unique feature of SCIAMACHY is the cabability of sensing the atmosphere in various observation geometries. The combined analysis of spectra acquired in limb and nadir measurement mode allows the separation of tropospheric and stratospheric absorption components. This enables a global determination of tropospheric trace gases such as O3 and NO2. The poster presents various strategies for combined limb/nadir analysis as well as first results.
