Tropospheric levels of trace gases (HCHO, NO2 and O4) were investigated using ground-based MAX-DOAS measurements, employing zenith and off-axis viewing geometries.
Atmospheric determinations were performed in the Po Valley (N. Italy), a highly polluted region.
Diurnal trends are compared with results from simultaneous measurements made by other MAX-DOAS teams for the same location. They show excellent agreement for some days. The results prove that significant levels of HCHO and the other compounds were present during the campaign.
After the intercomparison period, values from different sites around Milan provide a picture of the horizontal and temporal distribution of these gases.
This study suggests the importance in obtaining a better understanding of the differences between the devices using the DOAS ground-based measurement technique and the data analysis tools in order to reduce the disagreements that occur in reporting results.
