MAX-DOAS measurements taken during the FORMAT campaign in Alzate - First analysis results in retrieving Formaldehyde — •Andreas Heckel, Tiberiu Tarsu, Folkard Wittrock, Andreas Richter, and John P. Burrows — Institut für Umweltphysik, Universität Bremen, Otto-Hahn-Allee, D-28359 Bremen
DOAS atmospheric measurements using the new multi-axis instrument developed at the Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen, were performed during summer 2002 in Alzate (50 km north of Milan, Italy), a typically polluted urban area in the midlatitudes.
This campaign represents the first attempt to retrieve Formaldehyde columns using the ground-based MAX-DOAS technique measuring in zenith and four off-axis directions with 3o, 6o, 10o and 18o elevation angles above the horizon. Another data product is the retrieval of NO2 columns.
Focusing the analysis on days with clear sky conditions one can retrieve slant columns of very good quality. In order to calculate vertical column amounts, it is necessary to compute air mass factors (AMF), which works fine at least for clear sky. By comparing measurements with different elevation angles it is possible to verify the quality of these AMFs. Since AMF computation needs a vertical profile of the trace species, one can retrieve volume mixing ratios and possibly profile information.
