A polarized radiative transfer model - ARTS — •T.R. Sreerekha, Stefan Buehler, and Claudia Emde — Institute of Environmental Physics, University of Bremen

The up-welling atmospheric radiation in the mm-wave spectral range is influenced by the presence of cirrus clouds, which have distinctradiative transfer properties compared to other cloud types. ARTS, a clear skyradiative transfer model developed in the Institute ofEnvironmental Physics, Bremen, is now being extended to include the effect of cirrus clouds. The model is designed to solve the vector radiative transfer equation in a 3-D spherical atmosphere. This will allow the investigation of polarization effects by oriented non-spherical ice particles. The presentation will describe the iterative solution we have implemented to solve the radiative transfer equation. A test which checks the implementation of the scheme will be discussed. Apart from the model calculations the presentation will also include a discussion on the single scattering properties of non-spherical ice particles .
