Retrieval of CO2 total column amounts from SCIAMACHY: Error analysis — •Michael Buchwitz, Sirma Tsvetkova, and John P. Burrows — Institute of Environmental Physics / Remote Sensing (iup/ife), University of Bremen, FB 1, P.O. Box 330440, D–28334 Bremen, Germany
SCIAMACHY is the first satellite instrument that measures CO2 in the NIR spectral region (at 1.6 um with 1.5 nm FWHM resolution, at 2 um with 0.2 nm FWHM). One of the ambitious scientific objectives of the SCIAMACHY CO2 measurements is to reduce currently existing large uncertainties with respect to the strength of CO2 surface sources and sinks, especially on a more regional scale (e.g., 1000x1000 km2). For this task a retrieval accuracy and presision on the order of a few percent or better is needed for a single measurement. For retrieval of atmospheric trace gases such as CO2 from the nadir measurements a modified DOAS algorithm (WFM-DOAS) has been developed. A retrieval error analysis using simulated SCIAMACHY nadir measurement will be presented for CO2 total columns as well as for the ratio CO2/O2.
