First Results from SCIAMACHY UV/vis Nadir Measurements — •Andreas Richter, Bernd Sierk, and John Burrows — Institut für Umweltphysik, Universität Bremen, Otto-Hahn-Allee, D-28359 Bremen
The SCIAMACHY instrument launched on ENVISAT in March 2002 is a UV/visible/NIR grating spectrometer observing the atmosphere in nadir, limb, and occultation geometry. In many respects, the SCIAMACHY instrument is similar to the nadir viewing GOME instrument on ERS-2 which has been operating continuously since July 1995.
In this presentation, first results are shown for scientific products obtained from DOAS retrievals on SCIAMACHY nadir measurements in the UV and visible spectral region. The emphasis is on tropospheric species such as BrO, NO2, SO2 and O3. The results are compared to measurements from the GOME instrument to provide a first verification of the SCIAMACHY data. Also, for selected case studies, the impact of the improved spatial resolution provided by SCIAMACHY is studied, in particular in view of possible effects on the interpretation of the existing GOME time series.
