Bremsstrahlung emission in the α decay — •Hans Boie, Jörg Fitting, Frank Köck, Martin Lauer, Oliver Niedermaier, Heiko Scheit, and Dirk Schwalm — MPI für Kernphysik, Heidelberg

The emission of Bremsstrahlung in the α decay of a nucleus has attracted strong theoretical interest recently (e.g. [1,2]). The results of these models differ considerably due to the complication of taking into account the contribution of the tunneling process to the Bremsstrahlung emission probability.

The most simple model is the semi–classical approach which gives good results in most cases. However for the Bremsstrahlung emission in the α decay it overestimates the measured emission probability [3] in the region around Eγ ≈ 300 keV by more than an order of magnitude. Other models agree better with the data, but due to the poor statistics of the data available so far a statement of the validity of one or the other model cannot be made.

Therefore, in an experiment presently performed at the MPI-K the emission probability of Bremsstrahlung in the α decay of 210Po is measured. Preliminary results of the first 100 days of measurement show qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions of [2] and already give better statistics than the data reported in [3]. The experimental setup and the current status of the experiment will be presented.
