A new opportunity exists at GSI: high resolution γ-ray spectroscopy of Λ hypernuclei produced via (π+,K+) reaction.
In order to test the feasibility of our experimental set-up, test experiments were carried out at GSI.
In the most recent test experiment, we have aimed to investigate the nature of background of π+ induced reactions. We expect that particles from the decay of nucleon resonances mainly contribute to the background. A BaF2 detector with six NaI detectors surrounding it and a plastic scintillator in front of it, were used to discriminate among radiation and different kinds of particles like π+’s, neutrons or high energy γ-rays. The results of this measurement will be discussed.
The performance of the beam spectrometer for tracking π+’s, which consists of two time-of-flight plastic scintillators and a position sensitive Silicon strip detector, will be discussed, as well.
