A new calorimeter telescope for heavy ion detection — •Radomira Lozeva — Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung, GSI, Darmstadt, Germany — Faculty of Physics, University of Sofia No-dqSt. Kl. OhridskiNo-dq, Sofia, Bulgaria

A new CAlorimeter TElescope array (CATE) has been developed for the RISING (Rare ISotope INvestigations at GSI) γ-campaign [1]. The detector system is aimed at identifying of the radioactive ions after secondary reactions (relativistic Coulomb excitation or fragmentation) which will be performed at incident energies around 100 MeV/n.

The first telescope prototype, consisting of Si and CsI(Tl) detectors, has been investigated in-beam with several heavy ion species at beam energies around 100 MeV/n. The Si-transmission detector yields information on the position (x,y) and energy loss (Δ E) of the impinging ions, which allows determination of the impact parameter (b) and the element number (Z), respectively. The heavy ions are then implanted in the CsI(Tl) scintillator. From the measured residual energy (E) in this total absorber, the mass number (A) of the particles can be obtained.

In the present work the results from different test-experiments will be discussed. Typical (Δx,Δy)-; Δ E- and E-resolution values are better then 5mm(x,y); 1.5% and 1%, respectively.
