Emission of Thermal Photons and the Initial Temperature in Heavy Ion Collisions — •Thorsten Renk — TU Munich — ECT∗, Trento
The determination of the initial temperature of the fireball created in ultrarelativistic energies is one of the key elements in the search for the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Measuring hard thermal photons, which are as electromagnetic probes almost unaffected by secondary interactions with the fireball matter, opens the opportunity to study the early phases of the fireball evolution. We calculate the emission of photons using a recently proposed model for the fireball evolution consistent with a large set of different observables and compare to data on photon emission taken by the WA98 collaboration. As the data set also contains a contribution from initial hard scattering processes with a rather unknown magnitude, a careful discussion of the possibility to constrain the initial temperature of the fireball by a photon measurement is made.
