Electron screening in d(d,p)t for deuterated metals: a possible classical explanation — •Francesco Raiola1,2 and Francesco Raiola1,21Inst. für Experimentalphysik III, Ruhr-Universität Bochum — 2Universitätsstr. 150, Geb.NB3/174, D-44780 Bochum, Germany

The electron screening effect in the d(d,p)t reaction has been studied at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum for 30 deuterated metals and 11 deuterated insulators/semiconductors. The deuterated metals were produced via implantation of low-energy deuterons.

As compared to measurements performed with a gaseous D2 target, a large effect has been observed in the metals. In contrast, a comparatively small effect is found for the deuterated insulators/semiconductors and for noble metals Cu, Ag and Au.

An explanation of the large effect in metals is possibly provided by the classical plasma screening of Debye applied to the quasi-free metallic electrons.
