The Dipole Response of Neutron-Rich Carbon and Nitrogen Isotopes — •Rudrajyoti Palit — Institut für Kernphysik, Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universität Frankfurt
The dipole response of unstable neutron-rich carbon and nitrogen
isotopes has been investigated experimentally utilizing
electromagnetic excitation in heavy-ion collisions at a beam
energy of about 600 MeV/nucleon. This investigation extends
earlier work performed for the oxygen isotope chain, where a
strong fragmentation of the dipole strength was observed for the
neutron-rich isotopes as compared with the previously measured for
the stable isotope 16O [1]. A kinematically complete
measurement of the neutron-decay channels in inelastic scattering
of these secondary projectiles from a lead target was performed.
The dipole strength distribution was extracted from the
differential cross sections for electromagnetic excitation. In
contrast to symmetric stable nuclei, a considerable fraction of
the strength appears at low excitation energies, well below the
giant dipole resonance.
