The HERMES Tranversely Polarized Hydrogen Target. — •Phil Tait — Physikalisches Institut II, Erwin-Rommel-Str. 1, D-91058 Erlangen.
The HERMES polarized Hydrogen and Deuterium target has been operating since 1996 with a magnetic holding field parallel to the HERA electron beam. In order to open a new area of spin physics to the HERMES experiment, a new target magnet that produces a transverse field of high homogeneity has been installed. This modification allows the beam-induced resonance between the Hydrogen hyperfine states 2 and 4, which was previously forbidden, to occur. The difficulties presented by this so-called sigma resonance, the attempts made to minimize the impact of this sigma resonance on the nuclear polarization, and the first measurements of this resonance are presented. The current status of the target and the performance during HERMES data-taking since 2001 is shown.
