Accelerator Challenges of the Proposed Facility for Ions and Antiprotons at GSI — •Oliver Boine-Frankenheim — GSI, 64289 Darmstadt, Planckstr.1, Germany
Radioactive Ion Beams (RIB) have become an important tool for nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics and atomic physics. High intensity, high quality antiprotons beams are requested for studying the structure of hadrons. In order to meet the worldwide demand for higher RIB and anti-proton beam intensities the proposed ’International Accelerator Facility for Beams of Ions and Antiprotons’ at GSI aims to provide primary ions from protons up to Uranium with beam power up to 100 kW in dc operation and TW peak intensities for strongly compressed beam pulses. The increase in primary beam power will be accompanied by advanced target and separator design as well as fast secondary beam cooling in storage rings. Following a review of the proposed GSI facility, covering also the high-energy (up to 33 MeV/u) capabilities, some of the main accelerator design challenges related to high-current beam operation will be outlined, e.g. control of space charge effects and dynamic vacuum pressure.
