We present preliminary pion and proton spectra recorded during a commissioning run of the Dilepton Spectrometer HADES at GSI. The collisions system investigated was C+C at 1.9 GeV/u. In total 40 Million events were taken. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of pions will be compared to existing data [1]. The presentation will also focus on the performance of the HADES tracking system which is currently composed of 18 low-mass, high-granular drift chambers arranged in four planes, each two in front of and behind a super conducting toroidal magnet. The particle and momentum dependent detection efficiency will be reported as well as a concept for particle id (PID) reviewed.
