Quantum energy of vortex systems — •Laurent Moyaerts1, Holger Gies2, and Kurt Langfeld1 — 1Institut für Theor. Physik, Univ. Tübingen, D-72076 Tübingen, Germany — 2CERN, Theory Division, CH-1211 Geneva 23, Switzerland
We study the free energy of vortex systems as they occur in a variety of physical systems, ranging from solid state physics to Yang-Mills theories. In particular, we compute the free energy induced by the coupling of the vortex field to fermions, such as quarks or electrons. For these purposes, we use the recently developed No-dqNumerical Worldline ApproachNo-dq: results for the vortex free energy and the binary vortex interaction are presented in 3 and 4 space-time dimensions. As a by-product, the validity limits of the derivative expansion are critically examined.
