Strong contribution of the N* resonances in the Λ production observed at COSY-TOF * — •W. Schroeder, W. Eyrich, M. Fritsch, L. Pinna, F. Stinzing, M. Wagner, and S. Wirth — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
The associated strangeness production in elementary proton induced reactions is studied exclusively at the external COSY beam using the time-of-flight spectrometer TOF. The complete measurement of all charged particle tracks allows the extraction of total and differential cross sections and Dalitz plots as well. The full phase space is covered from the reaction threshold up to the COSY-limit. The main point of interest in the investigation of associated strangeness production in the reaction p p —→ K+ Λ p close to the reaction threshold is the insight into the dynamics of the ss production. The reaction mechanism can be described within meson exchange models. In these models the contribution of strange and non-strange exchange particles can be investigated as well as the influence of N* resonances. Moreover, measurements near threshold can give information about the role of the hyperon nucleon final state interaction. To study these topics there have been two high statistic runs at beam momenta of 2.95 GeV/c, 3.20 GeV/c and 3.30 GeV/c. Results will be discussed in this talk. The analysis of the Dalitz plots in particular shows a strong influence of the N*resonances at 1650 and 1710 MeV/c2. Additionally first data from a run using a polarized beam will be presented.
