Coulomb breakup of the near-dripline nucleus 23O — •Chiara Nociforo — Institut für Kernchemie, Johannes-Gutenberg Universität Mainz
The ground-state structure of the one-neutron halo candidate
23O has been investigated by an exclusive measurement of the
one-neutron Coulomb breakup reaction at high energy (≈ 500
MeV/u). The structure of this nucleus is presently subject to a
controversial discussion, and different ground-state spins have
been proposed. The differential cross section for electromagnetic
excitation is very sensitive to the spatial extension of the
neutron wave function, and thus allows the determination of the
orbital angular momentum of the valence neutron, while the
coincident measurement of γ-rays allows the determination
of the final core state populated [1]. A ground state spin of
1/2+ for 23O is obtained from our measurement. The valence
neutron is with a large occupation probability in an s state
coupled to the 22O ground state giving rise to a halo-like
structure.
