Solid D2 for its use in ultra-cold neutron production — •Klaus Kirch — Paul Scherrer Institut, CH-5232 Villigen PSI
Solid Deuterium (sD2) can be efficiently used as moderator/converter material in ultra-cold neutron (UCN) sources, such as the PSI Spallation Ultra-cold Neutron Source (SUNS). While the production of UCN in sD2 is assumed to be rather independent on the specific solid properties, the UCN extraction from sD2 strongly varies as a function of the temperature, ortho-D2 concentration, contaminants, crystal morphology, and methods of freezing. A dedicated research program has been started for measuring transmission and scattering properties of slow neutrons on differently prepared sD2. During experiments with cold, very cold and ultra-cold neutrons, the quality of the sD2 can be monitored simultaneously by optical means, such as in-situ Raman spectroscopy. The goal of the research is to understand the contributing physics processes and to learn how to produce the best suited sD2. The talk gives an overview of the ongoing efforts, details about the experimental setup and results from optical studies.
