Giant Absorption Cross Sections in the (n, Gd) Reaction — •Peter Fierlinger1, Peter Geltenbort2, and Helmut Rauch1,2 — 1Paul Scherrer Institut — 2Villigen, Switzerland
In 1999, the giant neutron absorption cross section of natural Gadolinium and Gd-157 in the order of 100 Mbarn at 10 m/s has been measured. This experiment also showed small deviations from the neutron Lambert law, however with rather small statistical accuracy[1]. In order to study these deviations in more detail, an improved experiment was carried out at the testbeam of the Ultracold Neutron source PF2 at ILL. The new setup contains a time of flight spectrometer with a new three disc chopper for high accuracy at very low neutron velocities. Systematic effects have been investigated with Monte Carlo methods. The results of the presently ongoing analysis will be discussed.
