For future investigations of warm dense matter (strongly coupled plasmas),
there is a need for a new probing method, because
conventional visible laser beams cannot penetrate the plasma due to the
corresponding low critical electron density. One possibility
is spectrally resolved x-ray scattering which can be realized by the
kilojoule PHELIX laser-driven x-ray source at GSI, Darmstadt.
Spectrally resolved x-ray scattering potentially provides both electron
density and temperature. The goal of this work is the
investigation of the probe transition Heα with its underlying
dielectronic satellite structure.
A plasma consisting of He-like chlorine ions was produced by the nhelix
laser-beam (140 J, 14 ns) with pressed salt or PVC targets. The x-rays were
spectrally dispersed using both a high-efficiency
HOPG-crystal and a high-resolution spherically bent mica crystal. This
allowed the calibration of the HOPG-crystal
and the investigation of the influence of dielectronic satellites on the
spectrum. The HOPG-crystal will be finally used to detect the
backscattered radiation.
