Assembly of an experimental setup for measuring the hydrogen content of carbon layers — •Florian Irrek, A. Pospieszczyk, B. Schweer, G. Sergienko, and U. Samm — Institut für Plasmaphysik, FZ Jülich, Trilateral Euregio Cluster, EURATOM-Association, Jülich, Germany

Inside a fusion reactor vessel layers of carbon are formed by redeposition of carbon originating from erosion of the carbon tiles which make up part of the first wall. Tritium and other isotopes of hydrogen can be trapped in these layers to a significant amount. Because of specified safety limits a diagnostic for measuring that content is of high importance for the operation of a future fusion device.
A new diagnostic is being developed using laser desorption of the hydrocarbon layers. In a first step the method is tested in a laboratory setup. The surface temperature rise will be measured by means of pyrometry, while the desorbed hydrogen will be quantified with a mass spectrometer. Another mode of laser operation is ablation by short laser pulses (20 ns rather than 300 µs for the long pulses), thus releasing trapped tritium and deuterium. It is intended to adopt this method at a later stage at the tokamak TEXTOR, combined with spectroscopic observation of the released particles.
This contribution presents the conceptual design and first results of the experiment.
