The connection between stopping matter density and the structure of the projectile bound electrons is under experimental and theoretical investigations. K-shell projectile radiation induced due to collisions of swift ions with target atoms was measured with high spectral and spatial resolution along the ion beam trajectory. Experiments on the interaction of 11,4 and 5.9 MeV/u Ar beam with SiO2 gels of 0.15, 0.04 g/cc mean densities and solid quartz were carried out at UNILAC facility at GSI-Darmstadt. The using of targets with low mean density allowed us to stretch the ion stopping length in solid up to 8 mm and to visualize the dynamics of the target bound electron capture. The results of spatially resolved spectroscopic measurements are discussed.
