The 3D Monte Carlo code EIRENE [1], widely applied in controlled nuclear fusion research for particle transport problems, has been adapted for radiation transfer (photon gas simulation), also for technical plasmas. It has been linked to a commercially available 3D finite element plasma fluid code (FIDAP) used to solve for the energy balance and flow fields in HID lamp plasmas. The goal is an improved predictive capability of this numerical HID model by eliminating some of the hitherto necessary approximations related to radiation transfer. The spatially resolved energy sources and sinks due to emission and absorption of line radiation are computed, separately for each line, and separately for the core and the wing photons. The Monte Carlo solutions are benchmarked with semi-analytical ray-tracing calculations for simplified 1D cases and full agreement is achieved. A figure of merit (CPU-time times statistical variance) for the 3D Monte Carlo performance is defined and it can be shown that currently both the FIDAP and EIRENE parts of the combined tool consume comparable amounts of CPU time. A critical issue remains the method of separating the line wing (optically thin) and line core (optically thick) contributions to stabilize the iterations between plasma- and photon gas solutions.
