An integral method for a better understanding of fast ion losses from magnetically confined fusion plasmas is being developed. Since fast ion losses may lead to different undesired effects on operation regimes, the mechanisms for such losses are of special importance for further fusion reactors. This may be obtained from a combination of a theoretical model of the behaviour of fast ions in tokamaks, together with the measurements of such losses. A full understanding is possible only with both methods. The code-package developed here provides the theoretical view of the losses, in order to understand the measurements obtained, using the appropriate detector. A full description of fast ion trajectories from birth to loss was made using different codes. The second part of this study is concerned with the development of a scintillator-based detector. The design of the probe is based on the alpha-particle detector used for first time in TFTR and further developed for W7-AS. A first model consists of a scintillator plate and a CCD camera to acquire the data, allowing the detection of lost ions in a wide range of gyro radii and pitch angles. Using a CCD camera, a very high spatial resolution is available but with a poor time resolution, that is resolved in a second model which uses a set of photomultiplaiers in addition to the CCD camera.
