Simultaneous observation of bound and continuum beta decay of bare 207Tl — •L. Maier1, D. Boutin2, T. Yamaguchi2, ESR group2, and FRS group21Physik Department E12, TU-München — 2Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung GSI, Darmstadt

Neutral 207Tl atoms decay via continuum beta decay to their daughter 207Pb. The additional bound state beta decay channel opens up for fully ionized 207Tl 81+ ions which can decay to hydrogen like 207Pb 81+ ions. To investigate the lifetime of bare 207Tl ions and the branching ratio of the two decay channels an experiment at the GSI was carried out in spring 2003. The bare 207Tl ions were produced using the Fragment Separator FRS and injected into the Experimental Storage Ring ESR. Beam cooling in a matter of seconds after injection was achieved by successively applying stochastic and electron cooling. Via Schottky noise analysis it was possible to simultaneously observe the decreasing number of the 207Tl 81+ nuclei as well as the increasing number of the bare and hydrogen like 207Pb daughter ions. Additionally a Si-stack detector could be moved into the ring for directly counting the hydrogen like 207Pb ions originating from the continuum beta decay channel. An overview of the experimental setup will be given and the results for the total lifetime and branching ratio of bare 207Tl will be compared with calculations. Supported by BMBF(06 TM 970 / 1) and GSI Darmstadt.
