The neutron-rich Be-isotopes 10,11,12Be and the C-isotopes 16,17C have been investigated with a number of transfer reactions. Each reaction is chosen to populate specific structures of these isotopes with distinct selectivity. In this way levels of single-particle, particle-hole and molecular character can be distinguished, and tentative spin-parity assignments could be made. Molecular structures are identified as rotational bands, which have large moments-of-inertia. Particle-hole structures are analyzed in the weak-coupling model or as core excitations. The different configurations are populated in the neutron-rich isotopes by one-, two- or three-neutron transfer, by proton pickup reactions and also by charge-exchange reactions.
