The pseudo-spin symmetry is an approximate scheme for describing nuclear orbitals lying high in a given shell. However, the range of nuclei over which this approximation is physically reasonable remains unknown. New data will be presented for 185Os, following the 176Yb(13C,4n)185Os reaction, extending the pseudo-Nilsson 1/2,3/2[4 1 1] doublet structure and the 7/2[4 0 4] band to significantly higher spins. Gamma-ray branching-ratio data have been analysed to obtain extensive B(M1) and B(E2) intraband and interband transition ratios and the data are compared with particle-rotor calculations based on the pseudo-Nilsson potential and the Woods-Saxon potential. The completed analysis and results from this study will be presented.
