Characterisation of Molecular Structures in α-conjugate nuclei, using the Hückel Method. — •P. McEwan1,2 and M. Freer11School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham, U.K. — 2Hahn-Meitner-Institut, Glienicker Straße 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany.

The Hückel method is a variational technique used commonly in atomic molecular physics to model the wavefunctions of covalent electrons. The results presented here show its first thorough application to the behaviour of valence nucleons in light, molecular, nuclear structures, via the linear combination of single-particle wavefunctions in a harmonic oscillator potential. Molecular structures were found for oblate nuclei from 13C to 25Mg, for prolate chain-state nuclei from 9Be to 25Mg, and for the higher order 2:1 prolate nuclei 21Ne and 33S. These structures are shown to be commensurate with the energy level scheme of the Deformed Harmonic Oscillator and the Nilsson model. Tentative links with experimentally observed states are also made.
