An on-line characterization of the SHIPTRAP gas cell was carried out with a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. As a primary beam 107Ag17+ and 109Ag17+ from the tandem accelerator in Garching with kinetic energies ranging from 20 MeV to 30 MeV were used. The beam was stopped in the gas cell, extracted and injected into the mass spectrometer. The efficiency of the gas cell was studied as a function of the beam kinetic energy and the beam intensity. The maximum efficiency was measured to be some 4% at low beam intensity and to decrease for beam intensities higher than 2*108 ions per second.Chemical reactions and adducts formation occurring in the gas cell during the experiment were a subject of close investigation, such as those due to water and hydrocarbons.
