We present new results on the Ξ− and Ξ+ production in
central and minimum bias Pb+Pb collisions at 40 A·GeV, measured by
the large acceptance hadron spectrometer NA49.
Rapidity and transverse mass spectra as well as an estimate for the total
multiplicity of Ξ− hyperons in central reactions are shown.
The comparison to measurements at other energies gives insight into the
excitation function of the production of multiple strange baryons in heavy
ion collisions.
The system size dependence of the Ξ− production is discussed in
terms of centrality selected minimum bias data at 40 A·GeV.
Furthermore, we show the Ξ+/Ξ− ratio in dependence on
collision centrality and beam energy.
Finally, our results are compared to other measurements
and model predictions.
