Coulomb breakup of nuclei in the 132Sn region — •Przemysław Adrich — GSI, Darmstadt, Germany — Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland

We report on preliminary results from an experimental study of the Coulomb breakup of heavy unstable nuclei covering about 20 isotopes around the doubly-magic 132Sn. The experiment in inverse kinematics utilizes secondary ion beams at 550 MeV/u beam energy and was performed with the LAND-FRS setup at GSI. The measurement is kinematically complete in the rapidity domain of the projectiles. Coulomb breakup in pheripheral heavy-ion collisions at high energy is a well established tool for studying dipole excitations. In case of heavy, neutron-rich nuclei this method allows to test recent theoretical predictions of new modes of collective excitations, i.e. oscillations of the skin neutrons against the core of the nucleus [1,2]. Also new features of giant resonances such as large fragmentation of strength due to the different occupation of proton and neutron orbitals are expected to be observed in heavy exotic nuclei [1,2,3]. Moreover the dipole response of neutron-rich nuclei was considered in the context of the nucleosynthesis r-process [4].
