The ALICE experiment, currently under construction, is designed for the investigation of heavy ion reactions at the LHC. One of its major components is a Transition Radiation Detector (TRD), which will provide electron identification as well as triggering capabilities for high transverse momentum processes at mid-rapidity. The study of hard processes, in particular charm and beauty production, is a crucial part of the ALICE physics program. The TRD, together with the Inner Tracking System (ITS) and the Time Projection Chamber (TPC), will allow the measurement of high p_t electrons. Furthermore, it can be used to trigger on high p_t ( > 3 GeV/c) particles, thus enriching the data samples for Υ measurements and providing the possibility to select jets. We present a survey of the physics performance of the ALICE TRD. Based on testbeam data and detailed simulations the PID capabilities as well as the tracking performance have been studied. The results will be discussed with respect to physics observables, such as the charmonia measurements.
