Acoustic detection of neutrino-induced hadronic showers in water requires a large number of hydrophones to achieve good sensitivity and low background. As an alternative to commercial hydrophones, we study the possibility of using low-cost, self-made hydrophones built from piezoelectric elements. Hydrophones made from various different shapes and types of piezoelectric sensors are characterized using simulated acoustic signals. Measurements from our acoustic testbench are shown, using single sensors as well as arrays of several hydrophones. Based on noise measurements and calculations, an estimate for the sensitivity in terms of neutrino energy is given. Supported by BMBF (05 CN2WE1/2)
