In a cosmological context, candidate fundamental theories often contain spacetime-dependent scalar fields. This talk illustrates this fact within a simple supergravity cosmology and discusses the ensuing spacetime-symmetry violations. Our model also exhibits the observed late-time cosmological acceleration and leads to varying electromagnetic couplings.
