Comparison between standard and island analysis for gamma hadron separation, using MAGIC MC data and data of 1ES1959 taken by HEGRA CT1 — •Nadia Tonello and Keiichi Mase — Max-Planck-Institut fuer Physik, Foehringer Ring 6, 80805 Muenchen

We compared different gamma-hadron separation methods using the new Magic Analysis and Reconstruction Software (MARS). The main goal of MAGIC experiment is to lower the threshold and to observe gamma-rays in an unexplored energy range. However, the behavior of air showers induced by low energy primary particles is quite different from that induced by high energy particles. As a result, many No-dqislandsNo-dq are seen in the images of lower energetic showers. Therefore, the proper treament of islands is essential for a better separation of gammas and hadrons. This method has been checked with MC data produced for MAGIC. We applied it also to real data, taken with the HEGRA CT1 Cherenkov Telescope. During the year 2002 , 1.6 million good events were recorded from observation of the AGN 1ES1959. We used this data set because it has been analyzed with standard methods and results confirmed the presence of a significant signal. Results of the analysis using the islands information will be shown in this talk.
