We present a formal analysis for the structure of the matrix elements for the one-photon two-electron transitions in oriented and aligned atoms. Based on a density-matrix treatment we show that the geometrical and the dynamical properties can be disentangled and the cross section can be written as a sum of terms which have a definite transformation behaviour with respect to symmetry operations (rotations and reflections) acting on the relevant vectors in the reaction (electron pair wave vectors, atom quantisation axis, photon wave vector). The power of the present approach and the physical significance of the various terms are discussed and illustrated by numerical examples.
