Analysis of Very Large Clusters in Strong Laser Pulses — •Ionut Georgescu and Jan-Michael Rost — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik komplexer Systeme, Nöthnitzer Strasse 38, 01187 Dresden, Germany

The new x-ray free electron laser (XFEL) sources under construction at DESY in Hamburg and at the LCLS in Stanford will open new land in the exploration of the laser-matter interaction. Clusters play an important role in this field, as they make the transition from the atom to the solid. A rather rough transition, with interesting effects such as emission of very fast ions and electrons or the production of coherent x-ray radiation.

A good understanding of the cluster dynamics under intense, hard x-ray laser fields is therefore essential for the design of the new experiments. Current MD simulations are limited to rather small clusters (N∼ 1000), mainly because the required computational resources increase with N2. We introduce a hybrid algorithm which aims to release the stress on these resources and open up the way to significantly larger clusters. In a first step, we test the algorithm by comparing to full calculations for short infrared pulses.
