Relativistic collisions of highly–charged ions with various atomic targets have been studied intensively during the last decade, both by experiment and theory. One of the dominant processes, which leads to the loss of ions from the beam, is the projectile ionization by the Coulomb field of target atoms. Therefore, a series of measurements have been performed in recent years to explore the total as well as differential cross sections of this process. However, while the behaviour of the total ionization cross sections is now well understood theoretically [1] even for ulra–relativistic energies, a quite remarkable discrepancy between experiment and theory was reported for the energy–differential cross sections [2].
In this contribution, we present and discuss the projectile ionization within the framework of the semi–classical approximation (SCA), based on Dirac’s equation. Calculations have been performed, in particular, for the single– and double–differential cross sections of the electron loss from the hydrogen–like lead ions Pb81+ in ultra–relativistic collisions with neutral atomic targets. The results are compared with the previous theoretical computations [2,3] as well as with available experimental data.
